Breathwork: What are you listening for?

Jungian Analyst, Psychotherapist & Clinical Psychologist.

Grace, honouring, reverence, gratitude, integrity and loving connection were some of the things I listened for on Sunday during an on-line breath work event. I was breathing with 433 people from all over the world under the guidance of Anthony Abbagnano, founder of Alchemy of Breath. I had a felt sense that we all were in harmonious unity in a higher vibration as energy pulsed through me. The purpose of the breath work session was to focus on calling more abundance into your life.

Anthony posed the question “What is the nature of abundance that you are willing to make yourself available to?” What is it that you would like more of in your life? Whatever it is, you need to activate the system for that longing, one of the first steps in the activation is that of noticing when it is already present. The more aware we are of something, the more we notice it around us. An example of this is how pregnant woman suddenly notice the many pregnant women around them.

We have learnt, actually we have been encouraged, not to notice certain things that shaped our mental filtering systems and created our world views. One of the things the western world learnt not to see is the energetic world around us. Our awareness of subtle energy is further obscured by the bombardment of modern technology which creates an overload of stimuli and an information clutter.

According to Anthony, our systems of listening ignore certain vibrational information and favours others. Furthermore, because we were born into cultures that value certain things above others, we don’t even consider perceptual modes of knowing, other than those we were taught, which become the ‘normal’.

There is also an underlying neurological mechanism at play here. This is called the reticular activating system (RAS) which is a bundle of nerves at our brainstem that filters out unnecessary information to allow the important stuff to get through. It is a survival mechanism that helps us distinguish non-critical information so we can prioritize. For instance, you might be listening for a threatening predator or oncoming truck, but ignore beautiful music coming from the coffeeshop.

What are you listening for?
